Report: Russian Authorities Suggest Imposing Significant Penalties on Residential Apartment-Based Crypto Miners

Russian authorities are reportedly planning to crack down on crypto miners who illegally use residential properties for mining operations. In an effort to reduce power outages in certain regions of the country, a government-appointed expert council has suggested imposing hefty fines on domestic electricity users who exceed their declared consumption. The fines would be calculated based on commercial rates typically reserved for industrial enterprises. Furthermore, the authorities may consider making amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses, which holds individuals accountable for electricity misuse. Andrei Romanchuk, deputy chairman of the board of the Association “Reliable Partner,” highlighted the tools available to Russian engineers to combat unauthorized mining activities. He also expressed support for measures that would create favorable conditions for industrial mining in Russia, including checks conducted by sales companies to legitimize the market. While crypto mining is important to the Russian economy, officials believe that regulating the activity would be more beneficial for the country.
