Over the span of the last 12 months, bitcoin (
BTC
) has seen an impressive increase of over 168% in value against the U.S. dollar, outshining many other asset classes worldwide. Surprisingly, meme coins have taken the spotlight as seven out of the top ten gainers in the past year, with TRUMP, WIF, BOME, BONK, MOG, and TURBO leading the charge.
Meme Coins Take Center Stage in Crypto Market: TRUMP and WIF Among Top Performers
In the timeframe from June 12, 2023, to June 12, 2024, meme coins have made a significant impact in the world of cryptocurrency. While
BTC
and
ETH
saw gains of 168% and 109% respectively, it was the comical meme coins that stole the show. The satirical presidential meme token maga (
TRUMP
) emerged as the top performer, skyrocketing by more than 122,000% over the past year. Dogwifhat (WIF) claimed second place with a remarkable surge of over 58,000%.
BOME experienced an increase of 17,000%, while BONK saw a rise of over 10,000% against the U.S. dollar. MOG took the fifth spot with a growth of over 8,000%, and TURBO followed closely behind with a gain of more than 4,900% during the year. Rounding up the top ten, AIOZ, OM, ABT, and PEPE all posted gains ranging from 1,300% to 4,800%.
On the flip side, some coins did not fare well over the same 12-month period. The Wormhole token W, despite its recent debut, experienced a decline of 59% and emerged as the biggest loser. Rocket Pool’s RPL token dropped by over 51%, while APE decreased by more than 49%. DYDX fell by 46%, and CRV was down by 43%, completing the top five losers.
Among the top ten decliners by percentage losses were also CSPR, KAVA, GMX, PIXEL, and FXS. This past year has highlighted a clear trend: meme coins have not only captured the market’s attention but have also demonstrated significant financial growth. While traditional assets like
bitcoin (BTC)
and
ethereum (ETH)
showed respectable gains, the astounding surges in meme coin values showcase a unique trend where humor and novelty are increasingly influencing market dynamics.
