Marathon Achieves New Milestone with the Largest Bitcoin Block Ever Mined
In a groundbreaking event on May 3, the Bitcoin network reached a new milestone as it validated its largest block to date at block height 841,886. This exceptional block, which surpassed the record previously held, was successfully mined by Marathon.
Block 841,886, now famous for its size, showcased a revolutionary technology project known as Logos. This decentralized initiative made its mark with just four transactions featured in the block. Marathon’s mining pool was duly rewarded for their efforts with a total of 3.16977148 BTC, which included 0.04477148 BTC, equivalent to $2,654.55, collected in transaction fees.
This remarkable block has outpaced the previous record holder, block 832,849, which was associated with the Runestone Ordinal project and connected to Leonidas, the host of The Ordinal Show and founder of ord.io. Block 832,849 featured the inscription of the Runestone and contained a total of seven transactions.
While block 832,849 measured at 3.990 megabytes (MB), the Logos block achieved a size of 3.993 MB. The enthusiasm for Ordinal inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain has been instrumental in driving the emergence of these exceptionally large blocks. This trend initially began in February 2023 when Taproot Wizards generated a 3.96 MB block, mined by Luxor.
Marathon had previously made history at the end of March with the mining of block 836,361. This block showcased the innovative concept of Bitcoin block art, featuring the letter “M” created by arranging the transaction types within the block to form the image. Despite its artistic nature, the block measured a modest 1.72 MB and included an impressive 8,320 transactions.
