Attorney Diana McDonald was disbarred by the Supreme Court of Georgia, the highest judicial authority in the state, on June 11 for embezzling $4 million from a bitcoin escrow transaction. Back in 2019, McDonald was a fiduciary for a client involved in a Bitcoin deal that went south, failing to deliver the promised digital currency. Despite assurances of the funds being secure, McDonald diverted the money to her personal accounts, as well as to her family, friends, and other entities. Although a third party managed to recover $2.4 million, $1.6 million still remains unaccounted for. The court found McDonald guilty of multiple breaches of professional conduct, including dishonesty, fraud, and failure to protect client funds. Her request to retire voluntarily was rejected, leading to the court’s unanimous decision to disbar her.
