A resident of Canyon Country in Santa Clarita, California has been accused of stealing bitcoin miners worth a staggering $579,000. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced on July 1, 2024, that they had arrested the 26-year-old man for possessing stolen property.
The suspect, identified as Bryan Thola, allegedly stored the stolen bitcoin mining ASICs in a cargo van at a public storage facility. The LAPD’s Commercial Crimes Division’s Cargo Theft Unit (CTU) reported that Thola was booked at LAPD’s Van Nuys Jail.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the LAPD has encountered theft related to bitcoin mining rigs. In late March, the CTU apprehended three individuals who were accused of stealing bitcoin miners worth a staggering $6.9 million.
Following the arrest of Thola, local news outlet ktla.com reported that he was released on his own recognizance. However, the LAPD has assured the public that the investigation is still ongoing.
In light of these incidents, the LAPD has once again reached out to the public for assistance. They are urging anyone with information related to these thefts to come forward and provide any relevant details that could aid in the investigation.
