Genesis Digital Assets Introduces Heat Repurposing Project in Sweden for Bitcoin Mining

Genesis Digital Assets Limited (GDA) has initiated an innovative project in Norsjö, Sweden, aimed at repurposing excess heat from one of its bitcoin mining data centers to provide warmth to a local garage. This partnership with Swedish firm Muttern Fastigheter exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to enhancing energy efficiency within the sector.

GDA, which manages 20 data centers boasting 600 megawatts (MW) of hashing power and over 180,000 mining rigs, has collaborated with Muttern Fastigheter to implement an energy-efficient heating solution. This initiative redirects surplus heat produced by GDA’s data center operations to deliver 90,000 cubic meters of heated air per hour at a temperature of 52°C, effectively servicing a 1,200-square-meter garage. This project addresses a crucial need in Västerbotten County, where winter temperatures can plummet to -25°C.

As stated by GDA, this innovative solution is entirely powered by renewable energy sourced from the nearby Vargfors Hydroelectric Power Station, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. The project was completed in less than 45 days, illustrating how advancements in bitcoin (BTC) mining technology can yield real benefits for local communities.

“Our initiative to heat a spacious garage using surplus heat from computing is a clear demonstration of how our industry can positively impact and integrate with local communities,” commented Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, GDA’s executive president, on Tuesday. He further emphasized, “We take pride in spearheading such efforts, as they reinforce GDA’s status as a leader in sustainability and showcase how byproducts of bitcoin mining can serve community needs.”

The success of this project has prompted local officials to explore the possibility of implementing similar solutions for municipal buildings. Both GDA and Muttern Fastigheter envision this partnership as a blueprint for future projects that could set new industry benchmarks for environmentally responsible energy repurposing. This announcement follows the recent revelation by bitcoin mining company MARA, which has begun heating a town of over 11,000 residents in Finland by utilizing heat generated from BTC mining.
