FBI Confiscates Digital Currency Connected to North Korean Ransomware

A Kansas City grand jury has indicted Rim Jong Hyok, a North Korean national, for his involvement in a conspiracy centered on ransomware attacks targeting U.S. hospitals and healthcare providers. The group engaged in laundering cryptocurrency proceeds to finance further cyber intrusions into global defense, technology, and government sectors. These ransomware assaults caused significant disruptions to patient care and formed part of a broader initiative by the hacking group “Andariel,” associated with North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau.

The Justice Department, FBI, and international allies have taken decisive steps to thwart these activities. These efforts include the seizure of $114,000 in cryptocurrency linked to North Korean ransomware operations and the disruption of malware deployment. Furthermore, the FBI confiscated $500,000 in virtual currency from previous ransomware incidents.

In a parallel move, the State Department has announced a $10 million reward for information leading to Rim’s apprehension. This indictment underscores a firm commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring accountability for cyber perpetrators.
