On Wednesday, the Connecticut State Police (CSP), in partnership with the Statewide Prosecution Bureau, announced a significant development in their efforts to combat cryptocurrency fraud. They successfully recovered over $63,500 for a victim of a phishing scam that targeted cryptocurrency investors. The incident, reported by a resident of Cheshire in April, involved a loss exceeding $68,000 due to a deceptive scheme promising new tokens.
Through the use of blockchain analytics, CSP detectives were able to trace the misappropriated funds back to the suspect’s digital wallet, where the majority of the stolen cryptocurrency was found. Following legal proceedings, more than $63,500 was seized and subsequently returned to the victim after a motion was filed in Meriden Superior Court.
The investigation is ongoing and has revealed that there are multiple victims scattered across the United States. The CSP Cryptocurrency Working Group advises residents to be vigilant and refrain from engaging with unsolicited offers regarding cash, cryptocurrency, or investments. They also recommend against sharing any personal or financial details with unfamiliar individuals. Individuals who believe they may have fallen victim to fraud are encouraged to reach out to the CSP via email for assistance.
