El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, has taken a strong stance against importers and food wholesalers by demanding a reduction in grocery prices, warning that he will employ the same tactics used against gangs if necessary. Bukele, known for his instrumental role in legalizing bitcoin as a form of currency in the country, firmly stated, “To importers, distributors, and food wholesalers, I have a message for you: cease exploiting the people of El Salvador, or bear the consequences without complaint.” He emphasized that certain prices had skyrocketed, tripling in some cases, severely limiting the accessibility of these essential items for Salvadorans. “By tomorrow, I anticipate a decrease in prices; failure to comply will result in serious repercussions,” he concluded.
